Ancient Legacies 8

 Descent in the Dark

The descent into the lower decks of the EAS Starlight’s Wings felt less like boarding a derelict vessel and more like stepping into a tomb meticulously curated by an invisible, chilling intellect. Commander Elara Vance and her team drifted down a long, metallic corridor lined with technical workshops and maintenance lockers. The space was eerily pristine, organized with a rigid, almost military precision that seemed completely untouched by the centuries, save for a dense, glittering layer of frost that blanketed every surface and caught the stray ice crystals suspended in the zero-gravity vacuum.

Specialist Miller swept his torch across a rack of meticulously arranged spanners and unclasped datapads floating lazily in the dead air. His voice, strained through his internal suit comms, broke the heavy silence. "Look at this, Commander. It’s too clean. Everything is exactly where it belongs, but it’s unnaturally still." Miller adjusted his grip on his rifle, his breath fogging his visor slightly. "It feels like a stage set. Like something out there is putting on a show for us."

Vance didn't answer immediately, her eyes scanning the reinforced bulkheads as they glided toward the central foyer, which housed the main engineering access elevators and the primary stairwell. The air felt heavy, burdened by an oppressive, freezing pressure that seemed to sap the heat right out of their suits.

Specialist Aris took the lead, her magnetic boots engaging the deck plates just as she pushed through a half-open, frost-welded bulkhead into the foyer.

She stopped dead in her tracks.

Instantly, her mag boots locked down hard with a heavy clack-whiss, and her particle rifle snapped up to her shoulder, sweeping toward the shadows. "Contact!" Aris yelled, the word sharp and cracking with sudden adrenaline.

Instantly, the rest of the team moved up with disciplined fury. Vance swept past the bulkhead, taking a tactical kneeling position to Aris's left, while Miller and Kovic flanked them, rifles raised, bathing the cavernous foyer in stabbing beams of white light. Standing less than twenty feet away at a fully powered-up, glowing control console was a human figure.

He was dressed in the high-collared blue service uniform of the ancient Earth Alliance, but the fabric was stiffened and crusted with rime frost. His gnarled, frost-covered fingers were just finishing a deliberate, rhythmic sequence of keystrokes into the archaic terminal. As the last key clicked, the figure slowly turned its head to face the boarding party.

The sight froze the blood in their veins. The man's flesh was withered, shrunken, and pulled terrifyingly tight across his skull, edged completely with a delicate lattice of ice. His eyes were not eyes at all, but two deep, absolute pits of utter darkness.

The entity opened its mouth wide, unmoving for a second as if trying to remember how to articulate sound, before taking a single, heavy, unsteady step forward toward the team. Instantly, the team flinched back, muscles tightening to fire. But before a trigger could be pulled, their comms systems betrayed them.

A concussive deafening burst of high-frequency static exploded inside their helmets, making their ears ring with sharp pain. The static didn't clear; it violently morphed, transitioning into a cacophonous wall of hundreds of overlapping voices screaming and shouting all at once. Some were shrieking in blind panic, others barking frantic, overlapping tactical orders from a battle fought centuries ago. Beneath the chaotic roar, riding the very lowest edge of the audio spectrum, was a horrifyingly distinct layer—faint, panicked voices from the Swiftsure, desperately reporting catastrophic structural damage from their recent crash.

The team winced, groaning in pain as they violently fumbled with their suit controls, struggling to dial down their radio volumes against the sonic assault.

"Get those frequencies down!" Vance ordered, gritting her teeth against the psychological weight of the screaming dead.

When they finally managed to clear their vision and look back toward the console, the figure was gone.

In its place, one of the massive, heavy-duty engineering access elevators stood wide open, its internal lights glowing with an amber standby pulse. Leading straight from the console across the frost-slicked deck and directly into the open elevator car were distinct, heavy bootprints etched in deep frost. Just like the phantom figure reported by Chief Engineer Torres back on the Swiftsure, the trail ended abruptly at the threshold of the car, vanishing into nothingness.

Vance struggled to make her voice heard over the lingering, rhythmic hum of interference still vibrating in her comms. "It’s leading us down. Form up, move in, now!"

With their hearts hammering against their ribs, the team scrambled into the cramped confines of the elevator car. Once the last of them was inside, Vance slammed her gauntleted hand onto the primary descent control, punching the button for the main engineering deck—seven levels down, plunging deep into the heart of the wreckage, and hopefully, to the core of the nightmare.
